He served in the United States Navy after clinical faculty earlier than returning to Duke in 1953 to finish an internship in internal medicinal drug in 1954 and residency in widespread and thoracic surgical operation in 1962. He joined the school of Duke in 1962 as assistant professor. Throughout his many years of carrier to Duke, Dr. Stickel assumed crucial management roles which include director of postgraduate clinical schooling for the School of Medicine, partner clinical director of Duke University Hospital, and chief of surgical treatment and chief of staff on the Durham VA Medical Center.
