“Residents at risk of dying from boredom”: Ann Coulter downplays Hurricane Irma as Miami floods

The strength of Hurricane Irma has dropped cranes and flooded city streets. Google, Trump, and the arrogance of power

Google is a "platform monopoly." Why don't authorities on anti-trust in the US care? ROBERT REICH , ROBERTREICH.ORG      Follow (Credit: AP/Marcio Jose Sanchez) Google’s search engine runs two-thirds of all searches in the United States and 90 percent in Europe. “Platform monopolies” like this can squelch innovation. Google might favor its own services, such as Google Maps and Google Product Search, for example. This is one reason why the European Commission hit Google with a record 2.42 billion-euro fine in June. Why hasn’t Google run into similar problems with antitrust authorities in the United States? It almost did in 2012. The Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Competition recommended that the Commission sue Google for conduct that “has resulted — and will result — in real harm to … innovation.” But the commissioners decided not to pursue the case, which was unusual. They didn’t explain their decision, but it may have had to do with Google’s poli

Victims shouldn't expect police visits, says Chief Constable

V ictims of minor crimes should no longer expect police to visit them, a police chief  has said. Sussex Chief Constable Giles York questioned whether an in-person visit served any purpose and said it would be more “convenient” for members of the public to interact with the force online. Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, Mr York said: “If your children are ill, you might quite like the GP to visit you in your house. But it wouldn’t even cross your mind now, to think to call a GP to visit your house.” He asked: “What’s the purpose of us going there? If it’s just to because the individual wants to see us, is that really the best use of policing time and investigation time?” C onsidering how officers should deal with a victim who requested a home visit, he said: “I hope they would explain that someone coming around isn’t going to add any value to your investigation, and actually that person’s time is better spent trying to find the offender than reassuring you.” He s

Buhari Begins 2019 Campaign, Visit El-rufai

President Muhammadu Buhari and some of his top aides yesterday allegedly met secretly with Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State to inform him that Buhari intends to run again for the Presidency as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019. A senior Presidency source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, allegedly revealed that the decision to inform El-Rufai was taken because the governor was being publicly touted as Mr. Buhari’s replacement in the event that the president cannot run for a second term in 2019 due to ill health. During yesterday’s meeting, President Buhari and his close associates asked El-Rufai to take up the role of honorary adviser to the presidential campaign which they said had already kicked off subtly through a series of propaganda initiatives since President Buhari returned from a prolonged medical treatment in London after spending over 100 days. President Buhari and his team also reportedly asked El-Rufai to prepare for a se

Image
$start 10 $end $start A reader struggles with the sinking suspicion that her husband has fallen out of love with her. Dear Elizabeth, I need your help. Lately my husband has gotten really distant. He doesn’t come home right after work, he barely touches me, he doesn’t want sex. I keep trying to talk to him about our relationship but he doesn’t say anything that really makes any sense. He either doesn’t say anything or gives me one word answers. I get so frustrated and it really hurts. We’ve been really busy and I thought that might be the problem, so I tried to find out if he wants to schedule a weekend away together, just us— but he seemed like he didn’t care one way or another. I guess, what I’m really asking you is, what are the signs my husband doesn’t love me anymore? I don’t feel right asking him directly, because if he still does love me, I don’t want to rock the boat. If he doesn’t love me, I don’t know what I’m going to do— but either way I don’t want to live
